What is a skinnyflint?
A skinnyflint is someone who enjoys the finer things in life, but also enjoys budgeting, and saving for the future. She (or he) lives a healthy, well-rounded life, without compromising her (or his) financial future.
We are two sisters, born & raised in Los Angeles, who inherited the cheapskate gene.
P is the older sister. She has travelled the world, and now lives in L.A., where she works as a lawyer for a hospital. P has two cats and a supercute Spanish style house from the 1930’s which she & her husband recently restored to its former glory.
K is (duh) the younger sister. She lives in a 525 sq foot studio apartment in Manhattan with her husband and two rescue pups. She started buying rental properties in the Detroit metro area after being laid off from a hedge fund in January, 2012. She now owns 3 single family houses in Ferndale, a duplex in Hazel Park, and a studio apartment in Midtown Detroit. She is happy to report she has 0 mortgages, thanks to her frugal lifestyle & commitment to stashing (instead of spending) her hard earned cash. She spends her free time walking her dogs in Central Park, sewing, creating elaborate vegan meals, volunteering teaching gardening to NYC schoolkids with Leave It Better, and taking aerial dance classes.
We started this blog to share our thoughts, recipes, and tips for living well while saving money.
